Once at an Annual Conference the subject of the ministers’
vacations was introduced. The importance of such vacation was strongly argued.
Mr. [Campmeeting John] Allen arose and said that, When he joined the
conference the preachers were expected to preach three times on the Sabbath and
once almost every other day of the week, and the minister’s vacation was
unheard of. But now, our young preachers preach only one sermon a week, and
that almost kills them, and nearly kills their audience, so that vacations have
become necessary. - from The Life of Rev. John Allen, better known as Campmeeting John 1888
